Day 18 - Adventure to The Three Gorges [Part 3]

Today was the day I went to one of the biggest hydropower-complex project in the world! China's Yangtze Three Gorges Project (TGP) is the main project for the development and improvement of the Yangtze River. The benefits of the project are flood control, power generation and navigation. It is amazing how when the TGP is completed, the flood control standard of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will be largely upgraded from the present level of preventing under-10-year floods to that of preventing 100-year floods!
As for power generation, the Three Gorges Hydropower Plant's (TGHP) total capacity amounts to 18200MW, and its expected annual average power generation accounts up to 84.7TWH. Its unbelievable that TGHP electricity is sent unceasingly to Central China, East China, Guangdong and Chongqing with the maximum transmission of 1000km!

Not to forget, for navigation, backwater of the TGP reservoir goes as far as to the southwest metropolis Chongqing. It improves 600km waterway, and greatly enables 10000-tonnage fleets to navigate between Shanghai and Chongqing. The annual one-way navigation capacity of the Yangtze River at the dam will be upgraded from ten million tons to fifty million tons.

So the day started as I alight the cruise once and for all and head towards the bus bay. Everyone was tired and exhausted but we had to go to the final destination, The Three Gorges Project, before heading back to WUST. As we reached our destination early in the morning, many other people were already lining up to get into the area. We had to split up during the bus ride in between the various places and on each bus, there will be a speaker talking about the next destination that we were heading to and the views surrounding us. It would be really great if I could understand what the speaker was saying because then definitely I will able to know more than what I know now.
So the first station was the Three Gorges Project Exhibition Center. The station features a model of the whole Three Gorges Project. The scale of the model is 1:850m. Just imagine how huge the project is! Just by looking at the configuration and the structure of the Three Gorges Project shows how much China is doing for its people. Other than the model, there are also other sculptures that signifies something important related to the project. In the next few pictures, I will explain the significance of these sculptures.
This is a sculpture of a triangular stone that is used to build a foundation at the bottom of the yangtze river. The sharp edge of the rock will be rooted to the ground at the bottom of the sea. This triangular stone is important as it minimises the current of the sea.

This sculpture on the wall is a combination of human and water. It actually signifies human and nature working together. The dam is the human creation which is built in order to control and make full use of nature, which in this case is the water.

After looking at some of the scuptures, I climbed up to the top of a staircase above this scupture and here are some of the sceneries!

After the first station, I went to the second station which is called 185. At this station, we were only given 10minutes because the station was small and the view was similar to the other stations.

After 185, we went to the to the Three Gorges Monument Park where there are sculptures and real vehicles on display to show what was being used during the making of the Three Gorges Dam. There is also a theatre that plays videos on the 3 gorges dam. Other than that, the park is like any other park with beautiful sceneries.

After the final destination, I went back to WUST being a more knowledgable person having experienced something really amazing for the past 3 days!

Reflection

Throughout the 3 days, it has been an amazing experience. Having to cruise on a ship, looking at beautiful sceneries, shouting at the mountains and hearing echoes at night, going to the Baidi Temple, looking at the people carrying the sedans, going through the Three Gorges, taking a longboat along the Shen Nong Xi Stream, going into the Three Gorges Dam and learning about the Three Gorges Dam Project, it was really something that I will tell my family and friends about when I get home.

However the most interesting day throughout the 3 day cruise to the Three Gorges would be day 2. On day 2, I learnt and experienced many things. I realized that people like Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei and Lu Xun were real people and not just gaming characters. It was also the first time I saw so many workers doing hard labour work in front of my eyes such as carrying the sedans up the 200 plus steps staircase and rowing the boat along the Shen Nong Xi Stream. It was also the first time I experienced geography in real life. I have always wanted to look at cliffs and erosions in real when I was in secondary school and my wish came true! It was an amazing sight. Now I understand why some people grow up becoming a greographer or becoming a geography teacher. May be it is because of the love they have for nature. Truthfully, it was really an adventure to the Three Gorges! ^_^
